OK, what is the deal with Twitter?

Who would even follow me? I don’t need to update everyone on my every move! Sound familiar? I hear it all the time.  But here’s the thing – don’t look at twitter as a way to give out your personal information (unless you want to), instead think of it as a way of getting information from others.  One thing is for sure, Twitter is blowing up…at a rate of 1,382% to be exact (as of March).  One thing is for sure, it doesn’t seam to be going anywhere anytime soon.  So it’s time to stop wondering, and start utilizing twitter for everything it can do for you.  And yes – there’s lots it can do.

Don’t know where to start? Well you’re in luck – mashable (a great resource for online social media) has just released a Twitter Guide Book for those who are new to Twitter.

The best part about Twitter? The external sites that people have developed to utilize the information flowing through tweets…even for your jobs search: www.TwitterJobSearch.com a job search engine for twitter.

There are tons of twitter’s you can follow that strictly post job postings. How to find them?  Once you make your twitter account click “find people” search “[city] jobs” [replace city with the city of your choice] and see what job twitterers are out there.  For example, want to live in Chicago? I just searched Chicago jobs & these are just the first 5 that came up: chicagowebjobs, jobschicagojobchicago, Chicagocareers, GreenJobChicago all posting job openings.  Think about it – instead of you searching everywhere for jobs, all you have to click is “follow” and a constant flow of job postings will come to you!

Leave it up to our generation to come up with the most lazy way possible to have information come directly to us! But hey, who’s complaining?

& for those of you who still want to hate on twitter…enjoy….

Real Life Twitter

Twitter has taken over. Countless organizations, people, and businesses are now thriving on Twitter, shouting out their current “tweets” to the world. With the convenience of a laptop, iPod, or Blackberry it’s easy to think that only a few people will see your tweets. The “Real Life Twitter” video, however, points out how that isn’t necessarily true. Twitter can be a great business networking tool if used correctly, but be careful about what is put on Twitter because you may not want everyone hearing what you’re saying.

Oprah’s on Twitter! Are you?

Oprah Fail Whale!

Well it’s official, Twitter is the now the real deal, mainstream, cool tech toy to talk about. Today Oprah made her first Tweet and if that doesn’t legitimize Twitter then I don’t know what will. In addition to Oprah jumping on the bandwagon, Ashton Kutcher and CNN just had a competition to see who could be the first to have a million followers! Ashton punkd CNN and ended up winning that one. But now that every TV personality, business leader and famous pet has a Twitter account does it take away from Twitter’s previous exclusive feel. Twitter used to be the gem of the technologically savvy Web 2.0 generation, where you could keep up to date on new tech updates, digital marketing trends or New York City traffic updates. Now my feed is filled with celebrity gossip straight from the mouths of the likes of Shaquille O’Neal and Al “LockBox” Gore. Although Twitter might be losing some of it’s intrigue to those early adopters, it can still be a great way to stay in touch with your online network. Not to be one on the outside, CASH for Careers is on Twitter too. You can follow us at @cashforcareers and get live updates from our blog and other great career search info. You can find more tips on how to use Twitter for your job search by following this link.

Be Careful Where You Tweet!

Remember back when AIM was the “cool” way to communicate to friends and family? Well times have changed. Fast. With the increased availability to 24/7 access to the internet, whether through laptops, PDAs, or cell phones, Twitter, a free social networking utility which lets you stay connected in real time has become increasingly popular. In fact, Twitter has now generated more than 6 million users (reluctantly called “Tweeters”).

While the ability to know what your brother in California or your girlfriend in Michigan is doing at any given moment does come with some obvious benefits, there are also some underlying consequences. Most notably, professionals have been getting cracked down on their “twittering” while at work. In fact, NBA players Charlie Villanueva and Shaquille O’Neal have been criticized by coaches and management alike for using the social network while on the job. So a word to the wise; be careful where you Tweet! Do not let it cost you your career!

For more information on the incidents with Charlie Villanueva and Shaq, check out the following links:
