Reputation: What you can learn from the Tiger Woods hype

tiger-woods-picture-11If you haven’t been living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve heard about the recent Tiger Woods incident. The world’s most famous and wealthiest athlete had a near perfect reputation until Thanksgiving. He got into a single car accident in his neighborhood at 2am Friday, November 27, 2009. He suffered minor injuries that will keep him out of the Chevron World Challenge, an event that he hosts. Not a very big deal, but there seems to be more to the story. Rumors are his injuries are from his wife confronting him over an alleged affair. As of now, nothing is confirmed but this story won’t go away easily. The world’s best golfer will face public scrutiny which could potentially cause him to lose out on endorsements.

As college students we can learn from this incident. Make sure you stay out of trouble and maintain a good reputation. You don’t want a picture from Facebook or a DUI to ever stop you from getting a job. You’ve worked really hard to get this far, don’t mess it up with a silly mistake!

My Dream Job: Becoming a Hunting Guide.

deer-pic

I love to hunt. Absolutely love it. If I could have it my way, I’d be huntin or fishin every single day, but can you actually live like that and still make money? Well turns out you can, as there are thousands of successful hunting and fishing guides across America. If you’re like me at all, it might be worth learning more about these opportunities. Getting in to this field isn’t as hard as you might think, there are even special schools dedicated to getting men and women ready for a career as a guide. The Colorado Outdoor Adventure Guide School is a great example of one of these types of programs. Head instructor of COAGS said this about his school:

In this basic two-week course, students are going to be real busy,” said Miner. “We have a lot on horsemanship, trail riding and packing, courses on big game hunting and fly fishing, (learning) orienteering with a map, compass and GPS, wilderness survival, camp cooking, outdoor photography, first aid, CPR and much more.” Needless to say, students don’t have a hard time falling asleep at the end of each day!”

I dont know about you, but that’s the kind of school I should have went to. If you can’t afford to go to a school like that, your next best bet would be to find a nearby active guide and ask if you can help him out. Taking on a sort of apprenticeship is great for learning the tricks of the trade, while also making great connections with other guides. Check out this great video clip which contains a lot more great info for somebody looking to get into guiding.

How to Become a Hunting Guide — powered by ExpertVillage.com
Confucious once said that if you choose a job you love, you will never work a day in your life. That really makes a lot of sense to me.  So if you love hunting, guiding might just be the job for you. Chase your dream and enjoy your life. Although the money may not be the best, your satisfaction with your life will be worth so much more. As my dad always said about picking a job, “Do something you love and the money will come.”

No Job?

We don’t need to tell you that the job market isn’t awesome right now. In fact, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE is the guru organization on college hiring) reports that college hiring is down more than 20% this year. CASH for Careers and your friends in the Career Services Network want to give you a few tips to help you through the tough times. Below are four main tips to help you in your job search.

Check back regularly for new tips and success stories from your fellow Spartans.

BE PROACTIVE

How easy is it to sit behind your computer and submit resumes to every online position you qualify for? Super easy! But is it an effective way to approach your job search? NO WAY! Don’t wait for jobs to come to you, be proactive! You NEED to have a game plan – pick 10 organizations or companies you want to work for and seek out ways to connect with them. Have a strategy.

Devise a plan to figure out what you want to do, where you would like to be and what companies/industries interest you the most. Having a game plan and learning how to convey that message to employers can help you land a job.

BE CREATIVE

Employers are always looking for innovative candidates who can really think on their feet. Why not WOW them right off the bat with a creative way of getting their attention during your job search. Successful candidates have used anything from video resumes to blogs to Facebook pages in order to land a job. At the very least, take the time to make each application unique to the company you’re applying to. Nobody wants to read a cookie cutter resume and cover letter.

NETWORK

You don’t need anyone to tell you again that networking is important during a job search, but we’re going to anyway! Networking is REALLY important! Now more than ever, it is critical to leverage your networks when seeking employment.

Not only should you keep in contact with people you already know in your field, you also need to create new contacts that can help you with your job search. Since 70% of jobs are unadvertised, it truly is who you know, not what you know that’s going to help you find a job. More recently, the phenomenon is who KNOWS you! Also, networking is not a one-time transaction, but rather a continuous process to foster a relationship.

PERSEVERE

In today’s job search, it would be easy to get frustrated every time you hear “We’re not hiring,” “That position has been filled,” “We don’t have the resources to bring anyone in right now.” Don’t take NO for an answer. If someone turns you down today, try again in a week or two to stay in touch with your contact. Keep your head up and keep trying. Having a positive attitude and a strong support system will help you get through difficult times.

Spartan Toughness

The Michigan State Spartans have once again reached the Final Four and it couldn’t have came at a better time. The economic woes of Michigan have effected businesses, students and families all across our country. But this weekend, we can forget about that and just enjoy MSU bringing some hometown love to the D. The Spartans are heading to Detroit to bring home a championship and I think we can all learn a lot from this great team. A lot of the lessons you can take from MSU’s season can be applied to a job search, so lets take a look at some of those.

1. Persistence – Coach Izzo and his crew have had a roller coaster ride over the course of the season. From the spanking by UNC early in the year, to winning the outright Big Ten Championship this team has seen it all. No matter what the challenge, the Spartans kept pushing and kept improving.

2. Focus – Over the course of the season the team has stayed completely focused on it’s goals of winning championships. Now we are Big Ten Champs and Midwest Regional Champions of the NCAA Tournament.

3. Toughness – The Michigan State Spartans are tough. Tougher than anyone else out there and thats why we’re in the Final Four. No matter what adversity they face, they work harder and grind it out. One of Izzo’s favorite acronyms is PPTPW.

Players Play Tough Players Win

This is the same for any challenge you might face. Be tough and you’ll usually come out on top. Getting a job these days is no easy task, but if you can be persistent, focused and tough you will eventually be succesful.

Don’t give up. Be Tough. Get a job.

That’s what Coach Izzo would say.

Even the NBA is Hit by the Economy

Colleges, businesses, Wall Street, The U.S. Government, the entertainment industry and sports leagues all have one common problem, The Economy! Everyone in the United States has been affected by the current economy in some way. Typically, the big money industries are mildly affected by swings in the economy, but the current U.S economy is proving other wise. Graduating high school seniors aren’t picking the best college they can get into, but the college they can afford. Many businesses have made major cuts, and let’s not even talk about Wall Street. Even the sports industry has taken major losses, particularly the NBA.

Late February in the NBA is one of the most exciting times of the season, but the current economy has dictated the opposite. The 2009 NBA’s trade deadline wasn’t about NBA teams trying to acquire talent to win a championship, but rather to dump salary. Big names like Shaq and Vince Carter couldn’t be dealt because teams can’t afford to take on big contracts. The NBA has seen major drops in attendance, with the small market teams hurting the worse. The NBA’s economic problems have reached a point where they had to borrow 200 million dollars this week to help out the struggling franchises. The money will be split between about 14 NBA franchises going through economic woes.

The economy is bad, and everyone is being affected. President Obama says that we are going through the worst economic times since The Great Depression. If there is any indication that he is right, the NBA’s troubles may be the biggest sign.

No Goal is Unattainable

Have you ever had a goal that you thought you may never reach? I know I have, but one woman has taken her lifelong dream and made it a reality. On February 5, 2009 Jennifer Figge, the 56-year-old endurance athlete, reached Trinidad’s Chacachacare Island after swimming portions of the Atlantic Ocean. The seas sometimes were so high that she could see only the top of the catamaran’s mast. She had been dreaming of swimming across the Atlantic Ocean since she was a kid, and she finally completed her dream by swimming from the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa to Trinidad. Her story only further proves that no matter how big a goal you may have, it is never unattainable!

Top 5 Games of February & A Career Fair

It’s mid January and the importance of NBA games are increasing. The midway point of the season hasn’t been reached, but significant games are still being played. So far, we have seen a top heavy Eastern Conference with the dominance of Cleveland, Boston, and Orlando. While all the teams below “The Big Three” are playing average basketball. In the Western Conference, the LA Lakers have been the best throughout the season. Spots 2-9 in the west are separated by a few games. Expect the race for playoff position to intensify in both conferences. The upcoming NBA schedule boasts some pretty good matchups in February.

Top 5 Games to Watch in February:

1. Sun, Feb 08 L.A. Lakers    vs.    Cleveland 3:30 PM ET     ABC
This is the second game of the season between the NBA’s best two teams. The Lakers bested the Cavs 105-88 on MLK day. Everyone’s favorite argument is who’s better, Kobe Bryant or Lebron James. Now we’ll get a second chance to judge this head to head matchup.

2. Thu, Feb 05    L.A. Lakers    vs.    Boston 8:00 PM ET    TNT
Last year’s NBA finals teams play for the second time. LA ended the C’s streak of 19 consecutive wins on Christmas day 92-83. Boston doesn’t want to lose the season series 0-2 as LA did last season.

3. Sun, Feb 08      San Antonio     vs.     Boston 1:00 PM ET    ABC
The last two NBA Champions face off in possible finals preview. Both teams feature a “Big Three” and are very well coached. This should be a low scoring grind it out affair.

4. Fri, Feb 27     Cleveland    vs.    San Antonio 9:30 PM ET    ESPN
San Antonio swept Cleveland in the 2007 NBA finals. This is a much improved Cleveland team and they have a chance to get a little revenge. Look for who Greg Popovich decides to put on King James, Bruce Bowen or Roger Mason Jr.

5. Wed, Feb 11     Denver     vs.     Orlando 7:00 PM ET
Orlando has been putting on an offensive clinic as of late. They are trying to rise to the top of the East. Denver has been playing pretty consistently since acquiring Chauncey Billups. They are 3rd or 4th best in the West when healthy. If Carmelo Anthony is back in the line up, look for a high scoring game.

Job Hunting

Lets talk about the four main parts of job hunting…

1. Scouting – Exploring Companies and Looking for Positions
2. The Wait – Waiting for and preparing for the interview
3. The Encounter – Interviews
4. Execution/The shot – Accepting/Negotiating

.

Part 1: Scouting

At first glance bagging a big buck & securing your dream job may seem to be very different types of topics, but if you dig in a little deeper, there are a lot more similarities than you might think. With a little preparation and hard work, both of these challenges can be met with success.

When beginning the quest for the legendary whitetail, careful preparation is of the utmost importance. First and maybe most importantly, you must pick the right area to hunt. Deer inhabit most areas and environments across our nation, but there are certain features and attributes of an area which lend themselves to holding exceptional populations of deer. Key features for good deer habitat are thick secluded areas for bedding and nearby food sources. Prime examples could be corn or soybean fields surrounded by thick swamp or tall timbered ridges overlooking an apple field. The key to success is researching and scouting out these areas to find the best environment and terrain for holding deer. If you can do this and set up between a popular food source and a bedding area, you’ve got a great chance to catch a bruiser buck heading between his bedroom and the kitchen.

When starting your career search, you must focus on preparation just as you do in deer hunting. One of the key points of preparation is deciding on the right job to pursuer. When looking for the right position, consider a job that you would truly enjoy and be excited about every day. Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.” Finding the right job for you is all about finding that special fit. Just as a hunter needs to find the right combination of land features to identify a good deer stand, job hunters need to look for a certain set of attributes when considering their fit with a company. When looking at a job, you should consider the corporate culture, the responsibilities of the position, and possible hours and travel requirements. Considering all the facets of a job will provide a clear picture of what your future could entail and it will allow you to make the best decision possible.

Make sure the next time your hunting that you tirelessly prepare and learn as much as you possibly can, whether you’re pursuing a deer or a job. Do this and you will put yourself in a great position to land the job of your dreams and the buck of a lifetime.
