Through countless interviews and career planning seminars you have learned to “talk the talk”, but the question is: “Can you walk the walk”? The art of walking in heels is a life lesson that every girl must master. From an early age most girls have stumbled around the house in their mother’s heels. Sadly, as young adults, most of us are still stumbling today. Here’s a video tutorial from YouTube with some small tips that will make a big difference in your ability to strut your stuff.
Career Path: Sid the Kid or Alex the Great?
Undisputed: the two most dominating young players in hockey are Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin. However, beside each of these giants success, they could not be more polar on the way the play the sport. Their rivalry has been compared to basketball’s Magic Johnson/Larry Bird in the 1980s; two great players, one (Ovechkin) with flash, show, and celebration, the other (Crosby) described as “pure”, fundamental, and classy. Below is the E:60 Article about Alex the Great and how people think of him:
Regardless if you’ve watched the Stanley Cup Playoffs or not, you can learn about how to market yourself to prospective job opportunities from Crosby/Ovechkin. Both are phenomenal at their trade, but as an employer, which would you hire? Ovechkin has received the largest contract in NHL history, but could it have been greater if he didn’t partake in “risky” behavior (dangerous driving, promoting speeding, cameo appearance in Vlad Topalov’s “Perfect Criminal” music video, etc.) or is that part of who he is and helps his “brand” to sell tickets? Sidney Crosby, who could not be more humble, plays the game the way Don Cherry and other hockey aficionados would like hockey to be played.
The preference to display yourself is yours, but an analysis of the employer is key if you want the job. But if Don Cherry was the employer, you want to be more Crosby and less like Ovechkin.
My Dream Job: Becoming a Hunting Guide.
I love to hunt. Absolutely love it. If I could have it my way, I’d be huntin or fishin every single day, but can you actually live like that and still make money? Well turns out you can, as there are thousands of successful hunting and fishing guides across America. If you’re like me at all, it might be worth learning more about these opportunities. Getting in to this field isn’t as hard as you might think, there are even special schools dedicated to getting men and women ready for a career as a guide. The Colorado Outdoor Adventure Guide School is a great example of one of these types of programs. Head instructor of COAGS said this about his school:
“In this basic two-week course, students are going to be real busy,” said Miner. “We have a lot on horsemanship, trail riding and packing, courses on big game hunting and fly fishing, (learning) orienteering with a map, compass and GPS, wilderness survival, camp cooking, outdoor photography, first aid, CPR and much more.” Needless to say, students don’t have a hard time falling asleep at the end of each day!”
I dont know about you, but that’s the kind of school I should have went to. If you can’t afford to go to a school like that, your next best bet would be to find a nearby active guide and ask if you can help him out. Taking on a sort of apprenticeship is great for learning the tricks of the trade, while also making great connections with other guides. Check out this great video clip which contains a lot more great info for somebody looking to get into guiding.

Satisfied With Your Work?
How important is job satisfaction? “The Career News” has one word for the person who continues to go to a job they severely dislike: insanity. “To be happier in your work life you need to start doing things differently. If you don’t, you’re practicing the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. It might be worthwhile to start changing your attitude towards your job.” I think most of us would be very surprised to learn the percent of people who actually enjoy going to work every day. As you look at your job or a potential new job it is important to consider how well you will like what you are doing. Sometimes the happiness an enjoyable job can give you is worth more than the increased salary or benefits that you may initially think are more important.

The Vera Success Story
At my graduation party last year I received all of the usual graduation gifts. Cards with $10 bills and inspirational books telling me I could be anything I dreamed were piled on the table at the end of the party. There was one gift, however that I had no idea what to make of. It was a Vera Bradley zip ID case. The gift seemed like a handy carrying case for my MSU ID and phone so I decided to throw it on my keychain. After two days on campus I couldn’t walk five feet without seeing a Vera Bradley handbag or purse.
Small town designers Barbara Baekgaard and Patricia Miller started Vera Bradley to make travel luggage more feminine. The success of the line and generation of a complete business plan has now led them to become one of the most popular bag designers on the MSU Campus. Follow this link to learn more about the business history behind Vera Bradley.

California Dreaming…
California knows how to party….
…or have internships.
With the snow falling in April, people might want to start looking for warmer climates to work in. California is known for its sandy beaches, hot sun, and of course the entertainment industry. Many people move to California to “make it big” in Hollywood, but what about just getting a job behind the scenes?
Most big entertainment companies, such as Time Warner and Viacom, hire for internships and jobs year round and most have offices based in the sunny state of California.
Some interesting jobs/internships are as follow:
MTV Networks Internship Program – San Francisco, California
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
MTV Networks San Francisco is part of MTVN’s growing digital media division. Our products (including Shockwave.com, AddictingGames.com, Atom.com, and Xfire.com) fall under channels such as Nickelodeon Kids & Family and Comedy Central online. Our networks are on the lookout for bright, creative students to participate in our internship program. Our internships are designed to offer students an opportunity to gain insight into the online media industry. Interns obtain hands-on experience by working in jobs related to their career fields and by interacting with professionals in on-the-job situations. Preference will be given to those going into their junior/senior year. We work with the student to determine how many days a week they are able to intern (usually 2-3 days per week for about 16-30 hours).

Watch Out for Workplace Rudeness
Ever wonder if someone was being rude or just plain ignorant? Are you rude and you don’t even know it? Careerbuilder.com recently came out with six behaviors you should definitely stay away from. The first on the list: interruption. I’m sure just about everyone can relate to this in some form. Have you ever been trying to complete an assignment for a nearing deadline and a coworker or friend will not stop interrupting you. It becomes so annoying that you can hardly work or stay focused. “Interruptions are offensive on many levels. When you interrupt someone, you suggest that your time and ideas are more important than everyone else’s and that you have no interest in listening to what they have to say.”
Remember when your parents always reminded you to use your P’s and Q’s. Well, it turns out this is still a problem for adults. Ignoring the words “please” and “thank-you” is one of the six behaviors to be avoided in the office. “In a 2002 Public Agenda survey, 48 percent of adults expressed only ‘sometimes’ encountering people who made an effort to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’; 16 percent said they saw such behavior ‘practically never.’” A few words to show gratitude can put someone in a good mood — or at the very least can keep someone out of a foul mood. Why not do it?”
If you would like to learn of the other four behaviors to be avoided in the office, you can find them at the following website:

Spartan Toughness
The Michigan State Spartans have once again reached the Final Four and it couldn’t have came at a better time. The economic woes of Michigan have effected businesses, students and families all across our country. But this weekend, we can forget about that and just enjoy MSU bringing some hometown love to the D. The Spartans are heading to Detroit to bring home a championship and I think we can all learn a lot from this great team. A lot of the lessons you can take from MSU’s season can be applied to a job search, so lets take a look at some of those.
1. Persistence – Coach Izzo and his crew have had a roller coaster ride over the course of the season. From the spanking by UNC early in the year, to winning the outright Big Ten Championship this team has seen it all. No matter what the challenge, the Spartans kept pushing and kept improving.
2. Focus – Over the course of the season the team has stayed completely focused on it’s goals of winning championships. Now we are Big Ten Champs and Midwest Regional Champions of the NCAA Tournament.
3. Toughness – The Michigan State Spartans are tough. Tougher than anyone else out there and thats why we’re in the Final Four. No matter what adversity they face, they work harder and grind it out. One of Izzo’s favorite acronyms is PPTPW.
Players Play Tough Players Win
This is the same for any challenge you might face. Be tough and you’ll usually come out on top. Getting a job these days is no easy task, but if you can be persistent, focused and tough you will eventually be succesful.
Don’t give up. Be Tough. Get a job.
That’s what Coach Izzo would say.
