Career Gallery is over…

lemmingworkerCareer Gallery is over! We all have internships, jobs and a positive outlook on the future!

Well, career fairs are a great way for people with practical ambitions to search for their after college employment, those of us with on the artsy “find-your-own-way-to-work-and-hope-your-not-a-waiter-for-life” route have to take a different approach. There are a variety of ways to make the connections you need and get the recognition your hard work deserves. These concepts can be used by anyone in any field.

When you meet someone that can help guide you in your career, make sure they remember you. This doesn’t mean you should strip naked and commit arson, make a positive impression. Have a, business card not one that is too simple and blurs together in the pile of prospective candidates, but one that shows your personality and is not something that is easy to throw away (cover it in glue! They’ll never lose it). Be careful that your card is not too flashy for your industry. Make sure you know the climate and appropriateness of your interactions with professionals.

Another thing to consider is a website. If having a portfolio is something that aides your job search, having a website to put it on is a great way to do it. Get a domain and use one of the various resources online to author your web page. You can also include a blog, this allows employers to get to know who you are. (make sure you don’t talk about your drunken escapades, remember employers will look at it) Believe it or not, employers want to hire a person who is compatible with their company, not just a lemming to do their work and go home.

Career Gallery 2009

2 words that should either get you excited or send fear down your spine: Career Gallery.

Michigan State’s LARGEST career fair seems far aways, but preparation is key on landing that job, internship, or co-op:

1) If you’re a freshman (or even sophomore), it may seem daunting, but one way you can get involved is being a Student Ambassador.  This entails you’ll be a helper for a company (or group of companies), whether they need you to run an errand, help around campus, or general advice about Michigan State, you’ll be a liason of help for them.

On MySpartanCareer.com, check out the “Events” tab.

Find “Career Gallery Student Ambassador Sign Up” and get involved.

2) Have your résumé ready.  This means critiqued, rechecked, refurbished, and up to date.  Résumé workshops are available EVERY Tuesday and Wednesday during the Fall and Spring semesters, for more information, click here.

3) Research, research, and RESEARCH.  First, research the companies attending (on MySpartanCareer, click “Events”, click “Career Gallery”.  Second, find out what each com

pany is looking for (Major?  Year?  Full/Part time, internship, co-op? etc.).  And finally, research: if you really want to stand out, approach a desirable potential future employer with the position you’re looking for, know exactly what the company does, and be prepared to ask questions.

4) Dress business professional.  This means suit and tie for men, skirt suit and blouse for women.  If you have questions about something, ask a parent, professor, or any respected professional, or refer here or follow the lawyers dress on Law & Order.  It may not feel like the “hip” thing to do, but this is the stuff that launches your career.  Make sure you appear clean and confident with a fresh shave and a conservative hair cut.

Career Gallery isn’t the be-all end-all to your career, but it is the BEST opportunity to get a job, internship, co-op, network, and really test where you are on the career playing field… or court

…Have I Heard of You Before?

So you’re at a career fair, and some companies you have never seen or heard of are everywhere.  Delta?  Alcoa?  Lear?  C.H. Robinson?  Many of these companies are actually pretty large corporations that want YOU to work for them, and with a little bit of effort, you can.  Perhaps you do know that Delta is an airline, Alcoa is an aluminum company, Lear is an automotive supplier, and C.H. Robinson is a Logistics company, but there are scores of smaller companies that look for top quality candidates as well.

Next time you’re going to a fair/presentation/interview, do a quick Google seach of the company and find: what they are, what they do, and anything new they’re up to.  Mention it to them and you’ll stand out among the rest that approach them with quesitons like, “What do you do, and what can you do for me?”

Check out some of these companies websites to see if you’d like to apply, and check out MySpartanCareer.com for companies at your next career fair.
