My Dream Job: Becoming a Hunting Guide.

deer-pic

I love to hunt. Absolutely love it. If I could have it my way, I’d be huntin or fishin every single day, but can you actually live like that and still make money? Well turns out you can, as there are thousands of successful hunting and fishing guides across America. If you’re like me at all, it might be worth learning more about these opportunities. Getting in to this field isn’t as hard as you might think, there are even special schools dedicated to getting men and women ready for a career as a guide. The Colorado Outdoor Adventure Guide School is a great example of one of these types of programs. Head instructor of COAGS said this about his school:

In this basic two-week course, students are going to be real busy,” said Miner. “We have a lot on horsemanship, trail riding and packing, courses on big game hunting and fly fishing, (learning) orienteering with a map, compass and GPS, wilderness survival, camp cooking, outdoor photography, first aid, CPR and much more.” Needless to say, students don’t have a hard time falling asleep at the end of each day!”

I dont know about you, but that’s the kind of school I should have went to. If you can’t afford to go to a school like that, your next best bet would be to find a nearby active guide and ask if you can help him out. Taking on a sort of apprenticeship is great for learning the tricks of the trade, while also making great connections with other guides. Check out this great video clip which contains a lot more great info for somebody looking to get into guiding.

How to Become a Hunting Guide — powered by ExpertVillage.com
Confucious once said that if you choose a job you love, you will never work a day in your life. That really makes a lot of sense to me.  So if you love hunting, guiding might just be the job for you. Chase your dream and enjoy your life. Although the money may not be the best, your satisfaction with your life will be worth so much more. As my dad always said about picking a job, “Do something you love and the money will come.”

Oprah’s on Twitter! Are you?

Oprah Fail Whale!

Well it’s official, Twitter is the now the real deal, mainstream, cool tech toy to talk about. Today Oprah made her first Tweet and if that doesn’t legitimize Twitter then I don’t know what will. In addition to Oprah jumping on the bandwagon, Ashton Kutcher and CNN just had a competition to see who could be the first to have a million followers! Ashton punkd CNN and ended up winning that one. But now that every TV personality, business leader and famous pet has a Twitter account does it take away from Twitter’s previous exclusive feel. Twitter used to be the gem of the technologically savvy Web 2.0 generation, where you could keep up to date on new tech updates, digital marketing trends or New York City traffic updates. Now my feed is filled with celebrity gossip straight from the mouths of the likes of Shaquille O’Neal and Al “LockBox” Gore. Although Twitter might be losing some of it’s intrigue to those early adopters, it can still be a great way to stay in touch with your online network. Not to be one on the outside, CASH for Careers is on Twitter too. You can follow us at @cashforcareers and get live updates from our blog and other great career search info. Watch Out for Workplace Rudeness

Ever wonder if someone was being rude or just plain ignorant? Are you rude and you don’t even know it? Careerbuilder.com recently came out with six behaviors you should definitely stay away from. The first on the list: interruption. I’m sure just about everyone can relate to this in some form. Have you ever been trying to complete an assignment for a nearing deadline and a coworker or friend will not stop interrupting you. It becomes so annoying that you can hardly work or stay focused. “Interruptions are offensive on many levels. When you interrupt someone, you suggest that your time and ideas are more important than everyone else’s and that you have no interest in listening to what they have to say.”

Remember when your parents always reminded you to use your P’s and Q’s. Well, it turns out this is still a problem for adults. Ignoring the words “please” and “thank-you” is one of the six behaviors to be avoided in the office. “In a 2002 Public Agenda survey, 48 percent of adults expressed only ‘sometimes’ encountering people who made an effort to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’; 16 percent said they saw such behavior ‘practically never.’” A few words to show gratitude can put someone in a good mood — or at the very least can keep someone out of a foul mood. Why not do it?”

If you would like to learn of the other four behaviors to be avoided in the office, you can find them at the following website:

Spartan Toughness

The Michigan State Spartans have once again reached the Final Four and it couldn’t have came at a better time. The economic woes of Michigan have effected businesses, students and families all across our country. But this weekend, we can forget about that and just enjoy MSU bringing some hometown love to the D. The Spartans are heading to Detroit to bring home a championship and I think we can all learn a lot from this great team. A lot of the lessons you can take from MSU’s season can be applied to a job search, so lets take a look at some of those.

1. Persistence – Coach Izzo and his crew have had a roller coaster ride over the course of the season. From the spanking by UNC early in the year, to winning the outright Big Ten Championship this team has seen it all. No matter what the challenge, the Spartans kept pushing and kept improving.

2. Focus – Over the course of the season the team has stayed completely focused on it’s goals of winning championships. Now we are Big Ten Champs and Midwest Regional Champions of the NCAA Tournament.

3. Toughness – The Michigan State Spartans are tough. Tougher than anyone else out there and thats why we’re in the Final Four. No matter what adversity they face, they work harder and grind it out. One of Izzo’s favorite acronyms is PPTPW.

Players Play Tough Players Win

This is the same for any challenge you might face. Be tough and you’ll usually come out on top. Getting a job these days is no easy task, but if you can be persistent, focused and tough you will eventually be succesful.

Don’t give up. Be Tough. Get a job.

That’s what Coach Izzo would say.

HOW TO: Find a Job on Twitter – Mashable

Don’t forget about other great social networking tools such as Facebook, LinkedIn and blogs that can also help with your job search.

Blog Your Way To A Career

It goes without saying that coming out of college this year there will be a lot of students struggling to find jobs. Anything a student can do to set them apart could be instrumental in the possibility of getting a job offer. But what if there was a way to both build your resume and maybe even make money doing just that thing?

If that sounds good to you then blogging might be just the thing for you. If nothing else, a blog is a great form of self expression and can be a lot of fun to create. But if done the right way, you can actually really help your career search.

Developing a blog is a great way of establishing an online presence for yourself and can really help you build your personal brand. I myself have seen the benefits of creating a blog in my career search. I have had several interviews where interviewers were very interested in my experience creating and managing my blog, Wired To Hunt, and in some cases recruiters even checked it out and commented on it. Showcasing a little bit of who you are online can go a long way in setting you apart from other candidates for a job.

Not only can blogging help you find it a job, but it can also be a job! Many succesful blog authors have been able to make great money selling advertisements on their sites. Small time bloggers can even make money by placing ads through Google’s AdSense on their sites. The key is develop a consistent and creative product that draws a lot of reader traffic. If you have a lot of visitors to your site and have a unique market, your site can be a very valuable advertising option for marketers.

The Handshake

I just came across a great article on BrazenCareerist discussing the importance of having a good handshake and it is so true! A good handshake is sometimes taken for granted, but a bad one can be as awkward as a 14 year old boy at his first dance. Nobody likes the “grab your fingers” handshake or the wet dead fish shake. You need a good firm shake that says you mean business. Read this article and practice your shake. It could make all the difference. What Does Your Handshake Say About You? – BrazenCareerist
