Career Gallery 2009

2 words that should either get you excited or send fear down your spine: Career Gallery.

Michigan State’s LARGEST career fair seems far aways, but preparation is key on landing that job, internship, or co-op:

1) If you’re a freshman (or even sophomore), it may seem daunting, but one way you can get involved is being a Student Ambassador.  This entails you’ll be a helper for a company (or group of companies), whether they need you to run an errand, help around campus, or general advice about Michigan State, you’ll be a liason of help for them.

On MySpartanCareer.com, check out the “Events” tab.

Find “Career Gallery Student Ambassador Sign Up” and get involved.

2) Have your résumé ready.  This means critiqued, rechecked, refurbished, and up to date.  Résumé workshops are available EVERY Tuesday and Wednesday during the Fall and Spring semesters, for more information, click here.

3) Research, research, and RESEARCH.  First, research the companies attending (on MySpartanCareer, click “Events”, click “Career Gallery”.  Second, find out what each com

pany is looking for (Major?  Year?  Full/Part time, internship, co-op? etc.).  And finally, research: if you really want to stand out, approach a desirable potential future employer with the position you’re looking for, know exactly what the company does, and be prepared to ask questions.

4) Dress business professional.  This means suit and tie for men, skirt suit and blouse for women.  If you have questions about something, ask a parent, professor, or any respected professional, or refer here or follow the lawyers dress on Law & Order.  It may not feel like the “hip” thing to do, but this is the stuff that launches your career.  Make sure you appear clean and confident with a fresh shave and a conservative hair cut.

Career Gallery isn’t the be-all end-all to your career, but it is the BEST opportunity to get a job, internship, co-op, network, and really test where you are on the career playing field… or court
