The East Lansing Film Festival

You are sitting at a table in the caf. Everyone you know, and normally eat with, is in class. Trying not to feel awkward you stare at the card in the middle of the table for the entire twenty minutes you are eating. At a certain point you actually read the card. You are most likely looking at the side that lists the movies. You see a listing that says ELFS. At first, you are surprised that UAB misspelled “elves,” then you realize; elves don’t make movies. At this time you figure out that ELFS stands for East Lansing Film Society.

East Lansing Film Society organizes the East Lansing Film Festival, which occurred March 19th-26th. Sorry you missed it. The festival is an opportunity for independent filmmakers, some who are local, and foreign filmmakers to exhibit their work. The society has partnered with MSU to host the films in Wells hall. The festival shows documentary, feature, short, and student films. Every year, since 1997, the festival has brought new work into the spotlight that students may not otherwise see. The festival also correlates with the Lake Michigan Film Competition, to award filmmakers for their art.

You may have missed the festival this year, but keep and eye out for 2010. This is a great place to gain some experience or network if you are looking to get into the film industry.
